On October 6th, there was absolutely no better place to be than at a small brewery in Ravenswood, floating in the digital glitch-pop magic of Chicago’s queer Asian princess: mai6fab.

mai6fab, known off the stage as mai linh, released an ep titled “the six mix” in march of last year – dropping 6 experimental, frutiger metro-esque electronica tracks into the scene. their music ranges in inspiration, with elements drawn from electronic legends like frou frou as well as from japanese techno-dance musicians like perfume. seeing mai6fab live was like witnessing the culmination of a bunch of futuristic internet styles coming together to form one musician.

the absolute chaos of the mai6fab aesthetic is alive and breathing during her sets as a pair of gut-wrenching lyrics & melancholic instrumentals can play right before a hyperpop song about people bringing their stupid fucking boyfriends to everything!

her performances are addicting, creating this crazy emotional drama physically while performing these heart breaking songs like ‘dreary,’ singing “i could be everything / better tonight” & “you’ve opened up my mind / i want you, here, right now, baby.”

this was one of the coolest executions of live music i’ve ever been to. at one point, mai sunk into the bench behind her, head in their hands, singing into the mic like she was crying out for help. her live music bounces off of the atmosphere and drives on nearby countertops, with her audience cheering, yet also at times simply just observing the performance. there was lots to soak in about the music and its live element in joint — things that required you to see the live part of it in action in order to fully take in a lot of the lyrics.

“the six mix” can truly entrance you all by itself, simply through your headphones at home. you can listen to a new, separate line of noise each time you play a song off the ep — from crunchy, crinkly sounds to the wildly futuristic beat that carries the lyrics. mai6fab’s discography is a crockpot of all types of electronic, glitchy instrumental backings paired with both relatable yet powerful lyrics.

this show was truly unlike anything i’ve ever seen before and my descriptions are insanely unconventional but i am positive that you will absolutely love the experience yourself.
